Braces for Children
In special cases, treatment starts during the mixed dentition phase (milk teeth plus first permanent teeth) to correct jaw misalignments and avoid later surgery if possible. This treatment is not for beautification, but to correct jaw misalignments. These can often result from typical child behaviors (pacifier use, thumb sucking, etc.). You should also pay attention to breathing. Ideally, one should breathe through the nose, as it acts as a natural bacteria filter and prevents respiratory diseases. If your child primarily breathes through the mouth (myofunctional disorder), it is strongly recommended to adjust swallowing and breathing functions. A speech therapist can help improve your child's breathing technique.
For children under 12, treatment is usually done with a removable brace. This treatment typically lasts between 12 and 18 months, and the brace should be worn mainly in the afternoon and at night. These children's braces are now available in many bright colors and various designs to make sure your child looks cool!
Three Steps to a Healthy Smile with Free Braces
The path to a healthy and beautiful smile for your child involves just three simple steps.
- Consultation: Everything begins with a consultation. It will be determined whether the prerequisites for free braces are met.
- Records: Your dental or jaw misalignment is analyzed in detail using the latest diagnostic methods such as digital scans, photos, and cephalometric and panoramic X-rays. The result is a comprehensive treatment plan that outlines how we will specifically treat your misalignment.
- Orthodontic Treatment: We schedule an appointment to start the orthodontic treatment. For children with milk or mixed dentition, this often involves a removable brace.
Certified Contract Partner for Free Braces
When choosing your orthodontist, ensure they are one of the few contract institutions for free braces in Vienna. This page lists providers. If so, it means that the free braces are genuinely free for you. This is not always the case. Even if a private dentist meets the criteria (such as training certifications in orthodontics), the insurance only reimburses 80 percent of the contractually agreed rate. How much you pay ultimately depends on how much the private dentist charges for their services. Since this amount is often significantly above the agreed rate, it can amount to several thousand euros. This is not the case with the institutions listed on this page. If your child meets the requirements for free braces, free truly means no cost to you.
